This is absolutely one of my favorite times of year…the back stretch running from October to December. The holidays temper the normally brutal pace of my day (career) job, and shorter days and cold nights make for a perfect excuse to hang out inside and get some reading and writing done. For me, these three months are a naturally creative time, and although I don’t know if I get my best work done, I know I get good work done, and usually a fair amount of it.
For example, this past Thursday (Thanksgiving), I was able to get up and nearly double my normal word count. Since I write in the mornings before I head off to my day job, I was able to work without keeping one eye on the clock. I had the whole day ahead of me (later to be filled with some beer, football, and a lot of food), so pace and time wasn’t a concern. Even though I had to go into the office the day after Thanksgiving, with so many other people out the building was quiet and there wasn’t much pressing for me to wrestle with, so I was able to get some other writing-related stuff done.
Plus, a little bit of reading on my Kindle.
I’m thankful for any and all time I get to write, regardless of the day or the season. I’m fortunate too that I have a spouse and daughters who are willing to give me some of their time so I can pursue my dream, because in order to get my writing done, I have to take a little of what I would share with them to do it. Writing is solitary, but it’s not a solo endeavor – at least not for me.
Apropos of the season, here are some things I’m thankful for:
- My other, better half – Del
- My girls
- My career – it’s been a wonderful 18 years. I’ve gone places and done things I never imagined
- Louisville Cardinals – 2012/13 National Champions
- My elliptical + the DirecTV Redzone
- 1100 daily word count
- Rahr & Sons and Anchor Steam
- Games & Such
- A good movie; and
- A better book
