Two years ago, when THE FAR EMPTY released, I took the day off work……and sat in front of my computer, waiting for…something…to happen. Of course, nothing did: no balloons, no carnivals, no fireworks. It was one of the most momentous days in my life, and when all was said and done, it felt very…average.
Today, as HIGH WHITE SUN hits shelves (hopefully your shelf, in your house), I’ll be at work. No holiday, no vacation. No balloons! I got up this morning and hit my daily word count for the book I’m working now, and plan on spending the rest of the day at my office — my day job — just like I did the day before, and will do again tomorrow. It’s not that I’m any less excited about this book’s release (I’m thrilled), but I learned with THE FAR EMPTY that there is no real winner’s trophy or medal, no finish line. At best, there’s just another race: another book. And truthfully, I don’t even see it that way anymore, either. It’s neither sprint nor marathon, it’s just my life now. It’s how I define and devote myself to what’s most important to me: writing a new story that’s fired my imagination enough to face those blanks pages again and again; yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
The story lights the way.
And I hope that story might just end up firing your imagination, bringing a little light to your life, too.
There are always too many to thank for this stuff (although I give it a whirl in the acknowledgements for HIGH WHITE SUN). I have a great editor, a great team at Putnam, wonderful agents, and a family who puts up with having to share me with all those characters in my head. You don’t deserve that misery, and I don’t deserve your patience and support!
And thanks to you, each and every reader who supported THE FAR EMPTY. I hope you like the new one just as much.
And if you do, let me know! Please leave some stars on Amazon or a short review on Goodreads. Or just tell a friend about it. That stuff matters, it really does. And speaking of that, two other great books are also releasing today: GODS OF HOWL MOUNTAIN by Taylor Brown, and THE FIGHTER, by Michael Farris Smith.
They’re both really, really, great authors.
My latest book, but not my last one, is on sale NOW…

I am well into The Far Empty and love it! It has all the elements I look for, a great mystery unfolding that makes it really hard to put down, characters caught up in this that are real, not perfect, that I relate to, and bad people that are subtly menacing and at times terrifying, and then of course the great setting of the Texas back country. I am reading a great book, and on a journey to a place I have never been at the same time. Your real life experiences as an agent on the border combined with natural writing ability–great combination and looking forward to your next one and all that follow.
J.TODD SCOTT says
Glad you’re enjoying it! Let me know your final thoughts once you wrap it up, and I hope you like High White Sun as well. Best, JTS

Semper Fi,
Your stuff resonates because I know you’ve been there, and done that.
In The Far Empty, Ame’s last offer from Cherry, tied to the nickname given to her by Rodolpho literally gave me chills and caught me swallowing tears. And that’s coming from an emotionally seared veteran. Thank you, brother.
I have been searching for a new author. You is it!
J.TODD SCOTT says
I appreciate. Your comments mean a lot…

Mr. Scott,
I have a bone to pick with you. I feel like I lost a week of my life. Just finished your two books back to back and for a whole week, I could not put them down. I didn’t get any other things accomplished because I had to finish those darn books.
All joking aside, great stories. Very epic and I enjoyed every second of the story. Can’t wait for your next one.

Been reading a lot of novels that take place in Texas/northern Mexico and stumbled upon The Far Empty. Devoured it under a day! About to start High White Sun. Good stuff, really enjoy your work. As a retired LEO nice to see someone who gets it and can put it into words and on paper.
J.TODD SCOTT says
Thanks so much! Glad you like what I’m doing! And it’s particularly gratifying when others who’ve carried a badge and gun appreciate these stories.
