As I’ve said before, I don’t watch a ton of TV…I should say I don’t watch a lot of traditional network TV; I don’t really follow any sitcoms, I’ve never watched Survivor or any version of CSI or Criminal Minds, I’ve never really followed The Voice or American Idol. Have never even thought of sitting down to watch Duck Dynasty. I do watch a lot of sports, however, and some news, and I have a few series I regularly TiVO (is that even a thing anymore?): The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, and The Game of Thrones (I tried Agent of Shield, didn’t quite work for me, and I have to admit, the whole Dr. Who thing escapes me completely, although my daughters like it).
But recently, I started watching True Detective on HBO, and boy oh boy is it good.
Sometimes you watch or read something and say to yourself I wish I had written that, and that’s the way I feel about every episode so far of True Detective. The performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are fantastic and the cinematography and score are compelling and haunting (in fact, I’d call the whole thing haunting) but the dialogue is what really sucks you in. You don’t feel like you’re watching episodic TV, you feel like you’re reading a really good book.
Makes sense – the series is written by author Nic Pizzolatto.
I’m leery of TV not because I think what’s on is inherently bad, it’s just I hate to waste too much time consuming, when I’d rather be creating. That being said, a few programs – and True Detective is one of them – are worth the time because they make me, push me, to create better.
A lot better.
Tune in, I think you’ll enjoy it…
